The Value of Travel Agents

Most Americans still find value in using travel agents for booking leisure travel according to a national survey. The survey is significant - it was commissioned by Galileo, a division of Cendant Corp., which serves not only online consumers, but also 44,000 travel agencies worldwide (not Antietam Travel Service) and 60,000 hotels.

Harris Interactive phoned more than 1,000 people in June to ask them how they feel about using travel agents to book travel. Two thirds (68 percent) said they are more comfortable booking travel plans through a traditional travel agent.

What do they want from a travel agent?

  • 76 percent said, if they use a travel agent, the agent must be able to handle all bookings, including air, lodging and car rental.
  • 73 percent said access to real-time flight and hotel information is essential if they go through a travel agent.
  • 70 percent expect a travel agent to have advanced knowledge about various destinations.

"The study confirms that travel agents are still held in high regard by many travelers, due to their personal service, knowledge, flexibility and choice of vacation offers," said Galileo Vice President Eileen Kennedy. At Antietam Travel Service, we pride ourselves in the professional level of personal service we provide to our clients.

Alaska or Caribbean in 2006?

We would like to feature four group cruises for travel next year.

So 2006 is your year for Alaska. Then we would like to recommend either of two group sailings we are offering on Celebrity Cruise' Summit. Each itinerary is southbound starting in Fairbanks. The land tour portion features Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, and Anchorage, followed by a seven-night southbound Glacier Cruise, ending in Vancouver. Pricing for the 13-night CruiseTour from July 2-15, 2006, which also includes a one-night stay in Alyeska, starts at $3,214* per person including roundtrip airfare from Dulles Airport. Pricing for the 12-night CruiseTour from July 31-August 12, 2006, starts at $3,177* per person including roundtrip airfare from Dulles Airport.

So you would rather soak up the sun in the Caribbean in 2006. Then we have both an Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean cruise to recommend.

How about a 7-night cruise to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Princess Cays from Ft. Lauderdale on one of Princess Cruises' newest and largest ships, the Caribbean PrincessSM? Prices, not including airfare, start at $695* per person. But hurry. This cruise sails from January 14-21, 2006.

If the Western Caribbean is your preference, how about Royal Caribbean's newest and largest ship, Freedom of the Seas? At 158,000 tons, 1,112 feet long, and 184-foot beam, the Freedom of the Seas will be the largest ship afloat when she begins Caribbean sailings in June 2006. Prices, not including airfare, for the 7-night cruise from December 10-17, 2006, sailing from Miami to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and RCI's private stop at Labadee on Hispaniola, start at $805* per person.

Please see our ATS Specials for these and other group sailings. Please send an email to info or call Antietam Travel Service at 301-662-8080 or 800-722-3489 for further information.

*Prices are per person, double occupancy, and are subject to change without notice.
